ACADEMIC PROJECTS

SMU HUMAN RIGHTS FELLOWSHIP, 2019-2020

The SMU Human Rights Fellowship is the most prestigious human rights honor offered by the university and gives five students a year access to in-depth mentorship as they tackle pressing human rights issues through self-designed social innovation projects. I launched Generation Wealth, which is an accessible online platform that integrates multimedia stories and educational resources to increase financial literacy, promote generational wealth, and combat socioeconomic inequality among Black communities in Dallas. Check out the timeline, toolkit and film at generation-wealth.org.

SMU BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION (3rd place), 2020

The Southern Methodist University Business Plan Competition (BPC) allows student competitors to write a business plan, pitch it to investors and develop the skills necessary to be a successful entrepreneur. With two of my classmates, we worked with our professor Simon Mak and Yoram Solomon to create an MVP of our app Pawhood, a community that allows dogs owners to track and control their pet’s health, safety and social happiness. We placed 3rd and won $5,000!

BUSINESS NATURAL, 2020

Business Natural

Senior BBA Scholar Naomi Samuel’s project was sponsored by SMU’s Engaged Learning Project through the Cox School of Business and was a series of powerful photos featuring black women proudly wearing their natural hair in subtly bold yet tailored professional clothing. The images were exhibited for the Dallas community and sold to fund the Black Alumni of SMU student scholarship.

“The collective creation of an image that does not exist in mainstream media: the powerful female black professional wearing her natural hair.”

CREATIVE PASSIONS

FORWARD MAGAZINE

Forward Magazine was a biannual publication that featured dozens of editorials and commentary focused on using fashion as a lens to see social issues from a fresh perspective. I worked with Dallas makeup artist Shambreka Ward and fashion photographer Rachael Patterson to produce three print issues, which featured collaborators from LA, Australia, London, Arkansas, and several other places around the world. We hosted three launches and worked with brands like StyleCon Dallas, Tiff’s Treats, Sweetbeat Vodka, Crazy Merman, Grimaldi’s Pizza and more.
